Numbered Among the Transgressors

One unique cultural phenomenon that draws widespread interest is Super Bowl commercials. If you watched  the big game last month, you likely took note of which ads were most entertaining or memorable. For advertisers, making a significant impact is imperative, especially considering that a 60-second spot costs an estimated $16 million.

One group recently funded an advertisement titled “Jesus Gets Us.” This campaign was managed by Come Near, a nonprofit evangelical organization dedicated to inviting everyone one step closer to the authentic Jesus.

While the specific impact of the ad in reaching unbelievers is unknown, there is no question that Jesus does get us – He understands each of us perfectly and fully.

In fact, the sinless Son of God, the Messiah, left His glorious abode in heaven to dwell among us as a man. He came to be the Suffering Servant who would bear our sins on the cross, making a way for sinful man to be reconciled to a Holy God.

The prophet Isaiah wrote about the Suffering Servant 700 years before Christ walked this earth as a man:

“He poured out His soul unto death,
And He was numbered with the transgressors,
And He bore the sin of many,
And made intercession for the transgressors” (Isaiah 53:12).

Jesus, God incarnate, came not to be served but to serve, giving His life as a ransom for many and making redemption possible. As 2 Corinthians 5:21 states: “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

On the cross, the Lord Jesus poured out His life so that we might have abundant and eternal life (John 10:10; 3:16). He offers this free gift to all who call on His name. Jesus understands us so perfectly that, while dying for our sins, He experienced the profound alienation from God caused by sin (Isaiah 59:2). His cry in Matthew 27:46, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” fulfilled Psalm 22:1 and marked the moment He experienced the fullness of that separation on our behalf. How God the Father forsook God the Son is difficult to explain, yet we understand on some level that Jesus, in His humanity, experienced the fulness of alienation from God that sin brings.

Because He was numbered with the transgressors, we who trust in Him can move from alienation to reconciliation, experiencing the blessings of His resurrection. While “Jesus gets us,” the vital question remains: do we “get” the depth of His love?

Consider the thief on the cross. Though he initially mocked Jesus, he eventually recognized his own sin and the Savior’s innocence, crying out, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” Jesus assured him, “Today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:39-43).

As we pray and witness to those around us, may they turn to Him in faith and experience the love described in 1 John 3:1: “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!”
