Antidote for the “News Blues”

As Spring has sprung, I’ve been noticing a common malady affecting many brothers and sisters in Christ lately. I call it the “News Blues.” The symptoms may include but are not limited to discouragement, disillusionment, and depression. I must admit, I occasionally experience these symptoms myself. We are incessantly bombarded by a 24/7 news cycle that seems to feast on fear and propagate negativity.

It reminds me of a bit of media history. Back in the 1980s, when cable television was the “new thing,” the “Good News Network” was introduced to the nation. It lasted only six months before folding. In sharp contrast, Don Henley of The Eagles released a #1 hit in the mid-80s called “Dirty Laundry,” which captured and amplified our cultural infatuation with bad news.

I sometimes quip to people that the only “good news” we should fully believe is the Good News—the Gospel of Jesus Christ!

Fixing Our Focus

In contrast to the often sad state of affairs on planet earth, the future for the Christian is bright. In fact, it couldn’t be brighter! If you are looking for the antidote to the “News Blues,” the Scripture is clear:

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2).

As Passover begins tonight and we approach Resurrection Sunday on April 5th, we have the ultimate reason to shift our gaze. We fix our attention on the Jesus – Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, and celebrate His glorious victory over death.

Because He lives we who know Christ will also live! The Apostle Paul reminds us of this victory in 1 Corinthians 15:55-57,

So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”

“O Death, where is your sting?
O Hades, where is your victory?”

The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Remember and Rejoice

In this season—and indeed in all seasons—we fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. In Him, we find the strength to both remember and rejoice:

We Remember His ultimate sacrifice as the Passover Lamb.

We Rejoice in His victory as the Risen King.

As you navigate the headlines this month, remember that this world is not our home; we are just passing through. We aren’t looking to the 24-hour news cycle for hope; we are looking for the city not made with human hands.

In Him, we have a hope that no headline can touch.

Happy Passover and a Joyous Resurrection Sunday!
